Eclectek
AJ Newell—DC native, lifelong creative, and hip hop artist better known as Eclectek (Tek)—is the kind of performer you only get after decades of real rooms, real crowds, and real craft. For over 30 years, hes been a familiar force in the local scene, sharpening his voice where reputations are earned the hard way: open-mic rap competitions and poetry slams. Long before algorithms decided what moves, Eclectek was building momentum the old-school way—bar by bar, stage by stage, and set by set. That journey includes chapters under a few different names—Dreds, Scarecrow Da Arch Nemesis, and AJ Capone—each one a snapshot of an evolving artist refusing to stay boxed in. Hes also one half of the now-defunct duo Underground Civillians, alongside fellow local artist Sam Da God, a partnership that helped cement his reputation for lyrical precision and fearless experimentation. Eclecteks sound starts with an early obsession: music as a universe you can live inside. Inspired young and influenced by a spectrum that stretches from Muddy Waters to Prince, Metallica to Eric B. and Rakim, Run-DMC to Radiohead and Nirvana, he developed a creative philosophy that doesnt recognize borders—only energy. That range is exactly what birthed the name Eclectek: a signal that his hip hop is engineered from multiple worlds, stitched together with grit, groove, and intention. A self-taught producer who also plays guitar and bass, Eclectek builds records like a storyteller with a soldering iron—melding boom bap foundations with genre-bending textures and cinematic atmosphere. His lyricism is equally expansive, moving from socially conscious commentary to braggadocious boom bap, from relationships to personal loss, from mental health to veganism, and beyond—into otherworldly sci-fi concepts that feel like transmissions from a parallel timeline. And then theres the lore. Legend has it that long ago, something fell through the sky outside the District—an alien craft breaking apart like a meteor, scattering sparks across the night. From the wreckage emerged a lone traveler carrying two priceless artifacts: interstellar music masters and an extradimensional demo tape encoded with rhythms not yet discovered on Earth. The visitor blended in, learned the language of the streets, and began translating those cosmic frequencies into beats and bars—hiding the truth in plain sight. That myth lives at the center of Eclecteks persona—symbolized by his extraterrestrial logo—and it mirrors what fans hear in the music: a familiar hip hop heartbeat, enhanced by something unexplainable. Whether you treat it as metaphor or mission statement, the result is the same: Eclectek is a rare artist with deep local roots and a limitless sonic horizon. Tek isnt chasing a trend—hes building a catalog that feels like a portal: DC grit on the ground, galaxies in the background, and a voice thats been battle-tested for decades.
